Abstract. Approaches to the delineation of the alpine and subalpine belts in the Caucasus are considered. It is shown that the main difference between the alpine and subalpine belts in the Greater Caucasus is associated with communities of negative mesorelief elements: in the alpine belt these are low-productive alpine carpets, and in the subalpine belt – productive tall grasses. During the ascent from the subalpine to the alpine belt, the maximum production of communities shifts from hollows in the subalpine belt to the lower parts of slopes (geranium-hemlock meadows) in the alpine belt.
