The resource potential of Kabardino-Balkaria
in the development ofpopular science tourism

Abstract. The article presents the results of an assessment of the resource potential of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic in the development of popular science tourism (PST). A methodology for an integral assessment of the regional resource potential of the PST is proposed for two groups of indicators – the number of categories of objects (main and auxiliary) of infrastructure resources, a qualitative assessment of natural resources according to the criteria of uniqueness, sea-sonality and transport accessibility. The above calculations indicate a high level of resource potential and the highest priority for the development of the PST in the Nalchik recreational area. For recreational areas with an average (Prielbrussky, Chereksky, Zolsky) and significant (Chegemsky, North-Eastern) level of resource potential, the priority of the development of the PST is assessed as effective. The areas of specialization of the recreational areas of the KBR in the areas of development of scientific and technological progress have been identified. On the basis of the SWOT matrix, the objectives of the PST development strategy in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic were de-termined creating conditions for the formation and promotion of a high-quality, competitive and affordable tourism product for citizens, strengthening the scientific and educational role of popular science tourism. Tasks for their achievement are formulated. It is concluded that there is a need for a targeted and resource-provided regional policy to neutralize the weaknesses of the tourist potentialтof the KBR in the field of popular science tourism and threats to its development, to maximize the effective use of the region’s opportunities and resources.
