Abstract. After providing some background information on the history of regional literatures and literary studies, the article focuses on identifying current issues in literary construction in the new cultural and historical context. Many of these issues are common to the literatures and literary studies of the peoples of the North Caucasus, although there are specific features that need to be highlighted. The author’s significant pedagogical, research, and organizational experience forms the basis for addressing the issues of further development of the so-called “young literatures”in the field of literary criticism, as well as the problems that require scientific resolution. These include the issues of national identity and originality, as well as the author’s individual perspective on the world of things, which are rarely addressed by researchers of the literatures of the peoples of the North Caucasus. The article also touches upon the history, criticism, and theory of literature. In the latter, there have been changes, some of which cannot be considered positive. At the end of the article, some recommendations are offered that can help future researchers to avoid the noted shortcomings. Special attention is paid to the problem of the history of literatures, which are in demand in our time not only for secondary and higher schools, in which the literatures of the peoples of the North Caucasus, which have reached a significant artistic level, are studied.
