Abstract. The Kabardino-Balkarian Republic is a region with a developed river system. One of these is the Terek River, whose source is located on the slope of the Main Caucasian Range. It has a mixed feeding regime – glaciers, snow, rain, and tributaries such as Ardon, Malka, Urukh, Sunzha, Armkhi, and Gizeldon. It covers the territories of Maysky and Terek districts, where it is used for irrigating agricultural lands (Malokabardinsky Canal). In this work, while studying the ecological and hydrochemical regime of the Terek River, special attention was paid to copper and its compounds, as it is a trace element involved in the biochemical processes of animal and plant organisms. The need of plants for it is small, but its role is significant. We established the relationship between the content of copper and its compounds in irrigated waters and the soil of irrigation fields, assessed the level of pollution of the Terek River, and identified the most critical sections.
