Abstract. The article deals with the issues of the Adyghe literary process, which received scientific resolution in the works of the famous literary critic Khizir Kh. Khapsirokov, who opened a new direction in the North Caucasian literary criticism. A comprehensive study of the Adyghe literatures, begun by him, was continued in the works of the next generation of literary critics in the region. A brief analysis of several monographs of the scientist, who was one of the first to touch upon the complex problem of national identity, which did not receive sufficient coverage in the Soviet period, when for ideological reasons they downplayed the importance of the national, giving priority to the international, forgetting that these concepts are dialectically interconnected, is carried out.
