Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the main works of the 19th century on the problem of relations between Russia and Kabarda in the 16th–19th centuries. In accordance with the ideological orientation of historiographic sources, the author conditionally identified two main directions in the pre-revolutionary study of this topic: conservative (officially protective) and liberal. Representatives of the conservative direction of pre-revolutionary Caucasian studies substantiated the thesis about the exclusive role of autocracy in public life and the need to conquer the North Caucasus to ensure the protection of Russia’s state interests. This trend includes the works of N. M. Karamzin, P. P. Zubov, R. A. Fadeev, N. F. Dubrovin and other authors. In the studies of representatives of the liberal current of scientific thought of the 19th century, based on the social ideals of freedom and equality, attention was focused on the mutually beneficial and allied nature of the Kabardian-Russian historical ties, which required the search for peaceful, alternative to military, ways to join the peoples of the Caucasus. This direction is represented by the works of S. M. Soloviev, S. M. Bronevsky, N. F. Grabovsky, V. A. Potto, S. A. Belokurov, I. Atazhukin, Sh. Nogmov, Khan-Girey and others.
