Abstract. The article is devoted to the identification of the role of Sh. B. Nogmov in the history of Adyghe folklore and the definition of its methodological principles. The article examines the recordings of the lyrics of songs of a historical and heroic nature that have survived to the present time, as well as mentions of the legends accompanying them, based on which the work “History of the Adykhey people”was created as an important source. Based on the materials reviewed, it is concluded that it was Sh. B. Nogmov who laid the foundations for working with field materials and the methodology for studying them, and this gives reason to consider him the founder of Adyghe academic folklore.
